Do you feel like your working day never ends, even when you’ve left the office? Do you regularly deal with personal issues when you’re at work or even in business meetings? Then you’ve joined the connected executives club. Welcome to the era of blurring, which signals a new relationship between employees and their work.
Among executives, the disappearance of the boundary between work life and home life is increasingly becoming a reality. This phenomenon, known as ‘blurring’, gets worse every year. Nearly 80% of executives have to deal with work-related issues outside working hours, and even at weekends and when they’re on holiday. Almost the same percentage deal with personal issues when they’re at the office during normal working hours.
New technologies are affecting the business world and changing our relationship with our working time. Modern communication tools encourage flexibility: smartphones, tablets and laptops mean we can be more responsive and work anywhere and at any time. That means executives are contactable at all times and can be tempted to look at email in the evening or at weekends.
Despite the acceleration of blurring, 64% of French executives* are satisfied overall with their work/life balance, though one in two would like their company to do more to facilitate a better relationship between work life and home life.
